Friday Favorite Tumblr-Closet Collage

This week’s Friday Favorite Tumblr is the mastermind behind Closet Collage, Jessie Cohen. She has taken a childhood pastime of making collages and turned it into a successfully business and inspirational blog for Fashionistas to turn to.

CollegeFashionista: Where do you go to college?

Closet Collage: LIM College in New York City (I graduate in May)

CF: Where are you from?

CC: New Rochelle, NY

CF: How would you describe your style during your college years?

CC: Freshman year was definitely relaxed! There was an unfortunate number of sweatshirts and yoga pants involved. But sophomore year I really embraced being in New York and started finding my personal style. I love skinny jeans so I always tend to wear dark styles or black cropped chords, striped tops, chambray shirts, and little details like a leopard belt or silver ballet flats. I consider my style classic with a twist.

CF: Who is your favorite designer?

CC: Proenza Schouler

CF: What inspires your Tumblr page?

CC: Everything! It could be the music I’m listening to, the time of year, or a specific trend I’m loving at the moment. I tend to gravitate towards collections that are colorful and girly but not obviously so. I love designers like Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu, Erdem, Mulberry, and Band of Outsiders who create sophisticated clothing that still have a lot of fun and personality. I’ve been collaging since I was about six years old so my blog is just an extension of my love of fashion and creating collages.

CF: What advice would you give to college students looking to break into the fashion industry?

CC: Put yourself out there! You never know who your family and friends may know. I found out that a camp friends older sister was a menswear designer at Ralph Lauren, and I emailed her asking questions about the industry. She ended up needing an assistant at the last minute, and that’s how I got my first internship. Get involved in on-campus clubs that have to do with your career goals, stay in touch with people you meet, and reach out to them in the future. Even if they don’t have any opportunities at the time, you’ll be thought of when there is one because you’ve shown interest and initiative.
